Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Jelly Baby Ball 2011

It was a gathering of frocks and masks at the Sebel Brisbane that saw the 10th Jelly Baby Ball play out a wonderful evening.

In such colourful and spacious surroundings families friends and supporters, who in someway are linked the Type 1 Diabetes, enjoyed a feast of fine company, great food and exciting entertainment!

It wasn’t all about the wine and dancing it was about raising funds for this dedicated research foundation.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system mistakenly turning on itself, destroying beta cells within the pancreas and removing the body's ability to produce insulin. Insulin allows the body to process sugar to create energy, without insulin, the body literally starves as it cannot process food.

When a person is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it affects the whole family and will pose challenges for everyone. This difficult period will pass and you will learn to cope. Having diabetes will not prevent you or your loved one from enjoying a full and active life.

Progress is being made in the treatment options and management techniques of type 1 diabetes.

You can contribute to that progress by donating to type 1 diabetes online. No matter how large or small, your gift will help JDRF continue to move research from the laboratory through to a clinical reality for these people. (information found at www.jdrf.org.au)

My 11 year old daughter Lucy was rushed to the Mater Hospital on her ninth birthday.  That was the day we were told that she was now one of the the 122,300 Australians currently living with type 1 diabetes.

Thanks for supporting the event.  It was humbling to see how generous people were on the night during the auctions. While a great sum of money was raised, more is always asked for!

Many thanks from a grateful father and hopeful daughter.
